Hey there!

I hope things are going great for you and I’m really excited to write this letter to you! It’s been quite a while since I wrote a letter to anyone about anything so I apologize beforehand if there are a few mistakes here and there.

Like many people born in the 90s, the last few years were quite challenging, mostly thanks to COVID-19, one of the deadliest pandemics in the 21st century. We’ll talk about that soon. Before that, let me tell you a little about ‘pandemics’. Although the definition of a pandemic is broad and debatable, generally any physical and mental health conditions that extend over large geographic locations, that could be transmitted from one place to another, has a high attack rate, have minimal population immunity, and is widely infectious could be called a pandemic. In that sense, COVID-19, AIDS, Cholera, Dengue, and even mental health diseases such as depression could be named pandemics.

We all know COVID started out in the city of Wuhan, China; allegedly from a wet market where exotic animals such as pangolins, and eels were sold. Slowly, it started to spread around the world little by little. As of October 2022, around 6.6 million people died from COVID-19 and related infections. Surprisingly, AIDS is responsible for the deaths of around 25-35 million people, and the plague in the 17th to 19th century killed around 16 million people. So, in terms of lethality, COVID doesn’t come close.

But one thing that COVID caused was bringing the entire world to a standstill. Shops and trading were closed, transportations were off, and the hospitals were overrun with patients: causing the entire system in some countries to crash down. And even after the pandemic is under control, almost everyone around the world is suffering from its effects: the economy, inflation, mental health problems, and so on. This pandemic triggered the largest global economic crisis in a century, leading to worsened economic inequality, and affecting people’s savings. In essence, all the progress the world made to improve people’s lives came undone in just a year or two. Who knows when we’ll be able to recover everything.

I think that’s enough for now. I’m looking forward to hearing from you about what you think about the pandemic. I think I’ve focused more on the negative so I’d like to know if there’s anything positive about the pandemic that you discovered. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Godspeed.
